Action Project:

Implement a Waste Reduction and Recycling Program

Brief Description of the Project

A protocol is implemented by the class to collect recyclables (mixed paper and/or mixed bottles and cans) in their classroom, in a few rooms including the library on campus, or in all the rooms on campus including the office and lunch areas.

Full Project Description

After doing a waste assessment, students make improvements for setting up a recycling program. (Extent of the program depends on the age group. The program can be geared to just the students’ classroom – good for kinder, a few rooms including the library on campus – good for 1st – 4th grade, all rooms on campus including the office and the lunch areas on campus – good for 5th – 12th grade.) For example, students place recycling bins next to the trash receptacles in the classroom(s), office, library, or lunch area(s) throughout the campus. Students label all the recycling bins with proper signage (graphics) so all students on campus understand what to put inside the bins.

A protocol is implemented by the class to collect recyclables (mixed paper and/or mixed bottles and cans) in their classroom, in a few rooms including the library on campus, or in all the rooms on campus including the office and lunch areas. As a result all of the recycling bins are emptied by a recycling team or students from each classroom into the recycling cart(s) or 1 cubic yard plus recycling bin(s), which are serviced by their local hauler (garbage and recycling company). Note – some schools may use recycling carts from the hauler in the lunch areas which can be directly serviced by the hauler.
