Action Project:
Home Pledges or Surveys
Brief Description of the Project
Students pledge or have their family pledge to cut back on water consumption and use water saving practices.
Students develop and send surveys out to parents/guardians regarding their water conservation and clean water practices at home.
Full Project Description
Students work independently or with their parent(s)/guardian(s) to develop a plan to incorporate water conservation at home. Students note their pledges and report how they or their families have saved water through best practices like catching rainwater, reusing greywater, taking short showers, etc. The 40 Gallon Challenge is an example of a pledge with a competitive edge that motivates people to take action.
Students may take home a water conservation and best practices survey to complete with their parent/guardian as a homework assignment. Students may also develop their own survey, with teacher guidance. Students may encourage other students in other classrooms, or the entire school, to fill out a home survey and return it so that they can give a brief presentation and/or report on the collected results. The St. John’s River Water Management District offers two example surveys, one is a print-out and the other is an online interactive map of a home.
