Action Project:
Wastewater Stewardship Program
Brief Description of the Project
Students take action to prevent, educate about, and mitigate the impacts of contamination and pollution of indoor and outdoor wastewater.
Full Project Description
Students examine the possible pollutants and contaminants in indoor and outdoor wastewater, and the path of the contaminants. Students brainstorm ways to prevent water contamination and pollution inside and outside of the classroom, and take action together to be good water stewards.
For example, students may prevent water pollution by educating others about items that can clog drains, through posters and fliers. Students may also try to help mitigate the impact of pollution by arranging a stormwater drain cleanup and coastal cleanup day to remove trash that might otherwise end up traveling into waterways. A great resource is the Office of Sustainability Schools Program Litter Collection Event lesson. Students may go so far as to Adopt-A-Beach (California Coastal Commission) or Adopt-A-Creek and perform cleanup days on multiple occasions throughout the year.
