Baywood Waste Reduction Plan

"I reached out to the Office of Sustainability to help educate students and create systems for sorting waste at lunch." -- Deb Robert, Assistant Principal

Summary

On August 16, 2019, A general meeting with teachers, parents, students and the custodian resulted ina plan to outline a timeline of action, infrastructure needs planning, classroom bin audits to determine purchasing, new waste practice proposals for classroom jobs, curriculum and school-wide changes, custodian inclusion and training identification, liquids capture, and food share tables

With the help of the OOS Schools Program, Ms. Roberts formed a Green Team in collaboration with teachers, parents, custodian, and students. Together they conducted waste audits, took inventory of garbage cans and recycling bins throughout the school, and identified where more waste infrastructure was needed.

Partnerships were also formed with Recology and Rethink Waste to set up systems for waste sorting at lunch and to help us think through logistics.

In September of 2019, ReThink Waste fulfills most of infrastructure requests (Green brutes, liquid bucket and dollies, aprons, pickers) OOS provides 2 blue Slim Jims for recycling empty milk cartons in eating areas.

More planning inlcudes a school-wide staff presentation (led by OOS) to inform staff of AB1826 and SB1383 and implementation possibilities at Baywood school (8/27/19); a custodial information, training and input session (9/24/2019); and a school-wide assembly (10/21/19).
