Waste Diversion Opportunities and Goals

June 4 2020

On Sept 27, after an initial walkthrough, Emily and Esme came up with a plan for waste reduction to be approved by Principal Alex Quezada.

Summary

On Sept 27, after an initial walkthrough, Emily and Esme came up with a plan for waste reduction to be approved by Principal Alex Quezada. It was determined that the best course of action would include the following elements:

·       Alert entire school staff to new CA waste reduction mandates SB1383 and AB1826 through separate meetings with school staff and school custodians

·       Ask district facilities personnel to add organics waste diversion to current waste hauling service

·       Procure and place classroom recycling bins in 12 classrooms and library. Ask teachers at staff meeting to create and add a recycling monitor job to a student/s in class to help with recycling education efforts and to delegate emptying of bin to the common area recycling toter.

·       Add a liquid bucket to the lunchroom to divert liquid waste

·       Create and train a lunchtime student Green Team to help direct peers to liquid bucket

·       Teach 4R’s lessons and waste to garden lessons to be taught by Emily Henry during Gardening class

·       Conduct a lunchtime waste audit with 5th grade.
