“How-To” Guide

Complete the following steps to get certified.

Step 1. School Certifications: 25% or more of the schools in the district are recognized under the Green Star School (GSS) School Certification Program in at least one chosen pathway (waste, energy, water, schoolyard, or transportation).

Step 2. Institutional Commitment (District Office): The District Office commits to educating current and future staff about how to take action at their workplace in the specific pathway in which the district is seeking certification. A Green Team is formed at the District level and a policy for best waste management practices is developed and adopted. This Policy applies to all facilities and staff within the District.

Step 3. Baseline Assessment (District Office): Conduct an assessment of the District Office in the specific pathway in which the district is seeking certification. Create a monitoring team to identify areas of improvement and new areas that need attention in the district’s chosen certification pathway.

Step 4. Take Action: District and facilities staff take action in the chosen certification pathway at the District Office and during District activities. The District sets the example for schools by implementing its Policy and following through on its Institutional Commitment.

Step 5: Share: The District shares its accomplishments in taking action to have a positive environmental impact with GSS staff, the school communities within the District, and other school districts if desired.
