FCE Organics Waste Diversion Action Plan (lunchtime and recess)

April 21 2020

All Hands on Deck! SMELC teachers use on-site observation, reading and information finding, data gathering and analysis, KWL and written reponse school-wide to prepare students for the School-Wide Organics Diversion Roll-Out!

Summary

Based on the  waste audit site walk-through recommendations made by OOS and what is able to be provided by Rethink Waste, FCE decides to increase waste diversion by implementing school-wide recess and lunchtime organics and liquid waste diversion. A lunchtime waste audit led by OOS staff on Oct 4th 2019 with 4th and 5th graders, it is determined that the lunchtime waste diversion potential was 65% diversion by weight after separating compostable trays and food waste.

All students in grades 4 and 5 play the 4R’s games as part of their waste diversion education and training during the month of October. All students in Grades K-5 are involved in the Zero Waste Education unit created by SMELC educators. Observation, data gathering and analysis, KWL, written response and information gathering is done school-wide in anticipation of a school-wide organics diversion roll-out.

FCE sets an organics staff announcement, custodian training and school-wide organics roll-out assemblies for all grades. These take place on the dates of 10/1 and 10/23/19 respectively. Green Team student volunteers are invited to give their time to help manage bins during recess and lunch. A total of 89 students and 12 adult volunteers are trained by Rethink Waste on 11/1/19.

Lunchtime sorting begins the week of 11/2 – 11/6. The Rethink Waste team is on-site everyday during this week to help Green Team volunteers get started. Green Team volunteers are organized and managed by librarian Jo O’Brien. Green Teams also are coordinated by custodian Brian Campbell.
