Baywood Changemakers Take Charge!

June 4 2020

"Our Green Team officially launched our waste sorting program at lunch in October 2019. On the first day of sorting, we reduced our garbage production to 1 bag of garbage per lunch period!" -- Deb Robert, Assistant Principal

Summary

The Office of Sustainability helped us launch our work with a 4 Rs assembly, and helped us build common language and practices. During the assembly, Esme emphasized the "why" and connected our work to Baywood's "changemaker" model. Students left the assembly feeling motivated to create change at our school and to have a positive impact on the environment.

After the assembly we put sign-up posters up in the MPR for interested 3rd-5th grade students to help with sorting at lunch. We had an astonishing number of students sign up - over 60!

Our Green Team officially launched our waste sorting program at lunch on October 21,2019. On the first day of sorting, we reduced our garbage production to 1 bag of garbage per lunch period! The Rethink Waste team and OOS, were on site everyday from 10/21 - 11/1 to help teachers, lunch aides, students and Green Team find best practices as with new sorting set-ups, help Green Team bin monitors and answer sorting questions from students and the school community.
