Greening Taylor - Rots to Divert

May 28 2020

Students began sorting waste into 3 streams in the cafeteria! The Green Team helped make clearly labelled bin signs to help students sort and monitored the bins during lunch to educate their peers.

Summary

The students started a commercial composting and recycling program in the cafeteria during recess and lunch.  They sorted organics, recyclables and trash into three separate bins, something that hadn’t been done before at Taylor.  In the past, all waste from recess and lunch had been going to landfills; as a result of the “greening” of the cafeteria, only a small portion of cafeteria waste ends up in landfills.

Metrics

The school diverted 3 cu yards of organic waste per week, for 25 weeks.

17357 gallons of Mixed organics between August 22nd 2019 and March 13th 2020
Results: 311,220 lbs CO2e emmissions avoided
