Summary

On Sept 27, Emily Henry, Food Corp Garden Educator assigned to Los Robles, led Esme Cabrera on a tour of the current waste infrastructure needs and opportunities for Los Robles students. Los Robles is a small Bilingual Immersion elementary school in East Palo Alto serving 275 students. Initially, Emily expressed a desire to make a greater connection between lunchtime food waste and possible on-site composting as part of her garden curriculum.

The school had recycling service and one 64 gallon toter into which 12 classrooms could dispose of paper waste. No classroom or common area had recycling bins except for the main office and also the staff lunchroom. All students eat in the cafeteria. The cafeteria had an informal Food Share table to capture and share edible food. Emily was interested in finding a way to capture some organic food waste to compost in the garden and general waste reduction throughout the school.
